Two EBSU Students Receive N200,000 ASUU Scholarship

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) awarded two Ebonyi State University Abakaliki students N200,000 scholarships on Thursday.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) awarded two Ebonyi State University Abakaliki students N200,000 scholarships on Thursday.
The beneficiaries are university final-year Medicine and Surgery students Onwe Emmanuella C. and Chukwuemeka Ogar P.

Dr. Okechukwu Igwenyi, ASUU Chairman of the Ebonyi State University chapter, revealed that the students were chosen using strict but open criteria during the cheque presentation in Abakaliki.

Dr. Igwenyi dismissed claims that ASUU only supports strikes and industrial actions, saying, “We aim to show the public that besides advocating for better funding and university autonomy, we also support students by providing annual scholarships to deserving students from public universities across Nigeria.”

He said that growing school expenses make it unaffordable for most Nigerians. High tuition, food, and other costs have prompted some students to take desperate steps to complete their studies, he said.

Doctor Igwenyi worried about the terrible economic situations that drive many smart, hardworking students to leave out owing to poverty and dissatisfaction. He decried low student welfare, security, and the unstable national economy, which forces some students to find other money to pay tuition and basic requirements.

He also noted that many students are unaware of bursaries and scholarships, emphasizing the ASUU scholarship plan. This long-running program provides research assistance grants of up to N500,000 to chosen ASUU members at public institutions. Three members have benefitted from this program.

Dr. Igwenyi stated that ASUU’s check-off scholarship program has assisted poor Nigerian students. Recent ASUU-EBSU scholarship nominations have been successful.

Ms. Onwe Emmanuella was thrilled to be chosen and said the N200,000 will help her pay her school tuition. I feel elated and thrilled that the test was positive, she added. This scholarship will help me pay my outstanding costs and register for further classes.”

Ogar Peter, the second beneficiary, thanked ASUU-EBSU emotionally. He claimed the award will greatly assist his educational requirements.
