UniAbuja ASUU Ends 82-day Strike

The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) ASUU branch has suspended its 82-day strike immediately.

The union’s head, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, briefed media in Abuja on Monday after the congress.

The union began an indefinite strike on May 2, 2024, in response to the administration led by Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah’s illegal advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position and the violation of staff appointment and promotion laws in the absence of a Governing Council.

Dr. Ugoh said the council resolved to cancel and re-advertise the Vice-Chancellor job in line with due procedure. They decided to evaluate the union-contested hiring procedures and 2022/2023 promotion exercise.

In these 82 days, we interacted with the previous vice-chancellor who violated university norms and the Act. Ugoh said the Union went on an extended strike after all processes failed.

After the new council’s inauguration, the union continued interacting and secured a formal pledge to cancel and re-advertise the Vice-Chancellor job, examine recruiting practices, and revise the promotion exercise.

Ugoh said the union considered these pledges and unanimously suspended the strike in honor of the new council and interim vice-chancellor.
