UNIABUJA Denies VC Selection Bias

The University of Abuja has refuted allegations of bias and irregularities in the ongoing selection process for its Vice-Chancellor. Recent reports claimed favoritism toward Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, sparking protests by senior professors over a “flawed” process.

In a statement issued by Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the institution dismissed these claims as misleading and exaggerated. Yakoob stated that Prof. Maikudi, along with other candidates, is fully qualified and has effectively managed her role over the past six months.

Her accomplishments earned widespread praise, while critics dismissed the allegations against her as attempts to create tension and distract the University Council from its mandate.

The university emphasized its commitment to a transparent, merit-based process, adhering to the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. It assured that the Council will ensure the selection of the most competent leader to drive the institution forward.

Yakoob denied reports of coercion during a Senate meeting, stating the meeting was postponed to explore peaceful resolutions regarding members who walked out of a previous selection meeting.

He clarified that professors’ protests were peaceful and within their rights, denying any confrontations.

Regarding the alleged harassment of a Channels Television journalist, Yakoob explained that a misunderstanding about the journalist’s identity led to the temporary immobilisation of their vehicle but denied claims of detention or assault. He emphasised the university’s respect for media relations and individual safety.

The University of Abuja called on stakeholders to allow the process to proceed without interference, affirming its integrity in appointing the next Vice-Chancellor.
