Overview: Update on the suspension of school fees increments by the management of University of Calabar. UNICAL Suspends School Fees Increments Until Further Notice
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, has directed that the increment of school fees for undergraduates of the school be put on hold until further notice.
A statement issued by the Registrar of the University of Calabar, Gabriel Egbe, disclosed that the directive was coming on the heels of a protest embarked upon by students of the institution over the recent adjustment in undergraduate school fees.
Egbe said the management of the institution was a listening administration and has assured the students as critical stakeholders that appropriate arrangements have been put in place through constructive engagement with the students to resolve the matter.
The students who protested the hike in school fees earlier on Monday noted that the economy was already too tough for Nigerians to cope with, as the increment would mean that some students would have to drop out of school.
In an earlier statement issued over the weekend by its Public Relations Officer, Effiong Eyo, the management of the institution said the increment was necessitated by the economic realities and the need to maintain the academic standards that the university is known for.
The statement disclosed that the implementation of the 100 percent increment would take effect from the 2023/2024 academic sessions.
