The University of Jos’ School of Postgraduate Studies is pleased to announce the launch of a ground-breaking 24-month Master’s Program in Film Culture and Archiving Studies, which is being organized in association with the National Film Institute (NFI) and funded by many German organizations. Housed at the Department of Theatre and Film Arts, this program offers a scientific approach to film archiving combined with a thorough exploration of cinema culture through a unique blending of academic and practical elements.
An outline of the Master of Arts program in Film Culture and Archiving Studies
This is a major knowledge transfer collaboration between German and Nigerian institutions, and it is the first of its kind in Africa. Goethe Universität, Arsenal Institut für Film und Videokunst Berlin, and Deutsches Film Institute & Film Museum are among the German partners. These businesses are associated with the Transnational Bildung (TNB) initiative. The principal partners in Nigeria are the esteemed Nigerian Film Corporation/National Film Institute, Jos, and the University of Jos. This initiative is one of only twelve such programs worldwide, not merely a first for the region.
The Program’s Goals
The following are the main objectives of this creative program:
- Educate scientists about film and media archives.
- Provide African institutions with the appropriate training in film culture.
- Bolster the ability to protect Nigeria’s and Africa’s audiovisual legacy.
- Increase job opportunities: It’s worth noting that more than 90% of German students who took this course are now employed; it’s anticipated that Nigeria will follow suit.
The Nigerian Film Corporation, acting through NFI, will be in charge of the practical training components, while the University of Jos and Goethe University will supply the theoretical underpinning. By its partnership with the National Film Institute, the University of Jos will award the degrees.

Students from Nigeria and other countries who want to pursue professions in cinema culture and archival studies should apply to this program. There is a great need for experts in these fields due to the growing film industries in Nigeria and throughout Africa.
