University of Uyo Student, sets a new record with Ten Distinctions.

At the 23rd Physicians’ Oath-Taking Ceremony (Sponsio Academica), the University of Uyo created history when Dr. Joseph Peter Akpan became the top graduating medical student, receiving an unprecedented 10 distinctions out of 11 courses. His exceptional academic achievement raised the bar for greatness at the school.

The crowd erupted in cheers as Dr Joseph approached the platform to accept his well-earned cash and cheque awards. As they celebrated his remarkable accomplishment, his family, friends, and coworkers grinned with delight. Joseph’s path to this point had not been straightforward; he had encountered both personal and financial obstacles, but he had persisted in his quest for greatness. Now, his perseverance, hard work, and dedication had paid off in a way that surpassed even his own hopes.

The fact that he received distinctions in classes where such honours were customarily uncommon added even more significance to his accomplishment. He also broke a long-standing trend in which students from other states were typically recognised as the university’s overall best graduating medical student, becoming the first Akwa Ibomite to do so.

The 1,000-seat auditorium at the university was packed with more people than it could accommodate for the event. The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Fatima Kyari, who was represented at the occasion, delivered the physician’s oath to the 64 new doctors, who were attended by prominent medical professionals, university teachers, proud parents, and well-wishers.

In his speech, Prof. Nyaudoh U. Ndaeyo, the vice chancellor of the University of Uyo, emphasised that medicine is a discipline that is always changing and encouraged the young physicians to embrace lifelong learning. He reminded all of the graduates that they had all accomplished something extraordinary and complimented Dr. Joseph on his outstanding performance.

In his speech, Dr. Ubong Umoh, the Commissioner for Education for Akwa Ibom State, praised parents for their sacrifices. He reminded the new physicians that every child is a “better version” of their parents and urged them to never despise them.

The young doctors met with friends and family to commemorate the event, and after the formal ceremony, the festivities spread throughout the city. Dr. Joseph pondered on his journey while entertaining his friends close to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

He said, “I’m surprised and happy at the same time.” I once called my mum to let her know that I intended to drop out of medical school. If I did, she would disown me. I’m glad I remained in retrospect.

Noting that three of the seven students who received honours belonged to the same study group, he attributed a large portion of his success to it. His tale is one of tenacity, willpower, and the value of scholarly cooperation.

Future generations of medical students will surely find inspiration in Dr. Joseph Peter Akpan’s accomplishment, which demonstrates that success is achievable with perseverance and hard effort.
