Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has emerged as the winner in the Innovative Tertiary Institution category at the Solution Innovation District (SID) competition, organized by the Anambra State government.
The university surpassed competitors, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), and Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, during the event held at the International Convention Center (ICC) in Awka.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, praised the university’s achievement, noting that it underscores UNIZIK’s strength in research and innovation. The university secured first and second positions in the research category and dominated the student category, with UNIZIK students taking the top three positions.
The winning team, led by Prof. Nkiru Meludu, presented innovative projects, including:
- Triple Power Supply IoT-Based Smart Home Automation System
- Herbal Tea
- Orange-Flowered Potatoes Used as Flour and Semovita
Prof. Ikechebelu emphasized the university’s intention to collaborate with industry leaders to commercialize its innovations. He also mentioned the development of a farmers’ market in the university’s agricultural department, which will soon be operational.
The event highlighted UNIZIK’s leadership in innovation, and the university continues to demonstrate its commitment to research excellence and societal impact.
