Woman Earns Best Student Award and 6.40/7.00 CGPA.

Adunola Shoge’s inspirational journey from academic problems to greatness is truly remarkable. She overcame the obstacles to get an outstanding 6.40/7.00 CGPA in Ecotourism and Wildlife Management from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, despite being called a “dullard” and having to redo four classes. She won the 2021 Overall Best Graduating Student Award for her outstanding accomplishment.

Adunola found it difficult to understand even the most fundamental concepts of education for the first ten years of her life. Teachers and family members were frustrated because she was always the lowest-scoring student in her class. “Dullard” was a term I heard so frequently that it nearly became my name, and I always occupied the last seat in class. She recalled, “I was prepared to learn, but I simply wasn’t understanding it.”

Adunola’s parents, who were determined to support their daughter, sent her to West African Preparatory School (WAPSCO), where she had to start over from Basic One rather than Basic Four. This choice altered her life, despite the early anguish.

“The instructors at WAPSCO took their time with me, beginning with the fundamentals—numbers and letters. I was able to read a few words and had already mastered them in two weeks. My story altered after that,” she stated.

Adunola’s academic performance has improved with the right direction. In elementary school, she struggled but eventually placed in the top five, and in secondary school, she topped her class.

She was determined to keep doing well, and she came to the University of Ibadan with the specific intention of fulfilling a promise she had given her father: graduating with First Class Honours. However, her hopes were almost dashed by financial hardships.

“Until I couldn’t afford a set of textbooks and received a ‘B’ in that course, it didn’t really bother me.” I then understood that not having enough money could prevent me from realising my dream,” she stated.

Adunola took on a number of professions to pay for her studies and herself, including sales representatives, cleaning agents, housing agents, and cosmetics retailers. It was difficult to juggle employment and school, and by her second year, her CGPA had fallen to Second-Class Upper.

She reclaimed her First-Class status in her third year and kept it until graduation, determined not to let financial difficulties define her academic path.

“I took advantage of every chance to study. Regardless of how exhausted or busy I was, I made it a point to read every day as a pleasure, she added.

Adunola attributes her accomplishment to her parents’ steadfast support. She also thanked her mentors and teachers, saying, “They gave me their very best when schools rejected me and teachers gave up on me.” Her story is a stirring illustration of tenacity, diligence, and resolve.

Notwithstanding the challenges, she exhorts young students to have faith in themselves, be dedicated, and never give up on their goals.
