24-Year-Old Nigerian Butcher Gets EBSU Political Science Degree

Michael Ebe, a 24-year-old butcher from Ebonyi, Nigeria, graduated from Ebonyi State University with a Political Science degree.

Michael obtained a second-class upper division despite his struggles with school and slaughterhouse job. Punch interviewed him about his path and challenges.

Michael had numerous siblings and little money in a polygamous home. Unfortunately, his father died before funding his schooling.

“His death ended my hopes of continuing my education. “It broke my heart,” Michael remarked. “He always said I would go to school no matter what. Death seemed like the end of my world.”

Michael took a job in the abattoir with his butcher brother-in-law to fulfill his father’s vow. Michael started slaughtering cows and saving most of his money. He applied to study political science at Ebonyi State University after two years of hard labor and saving.

It was hard to balance work and school. Michael missed many early courses due to slaughterhouse work. “I had to butcher and supply meat to customers before rushing to class. It was hard, he said. “I would return to the shop after school to serve evening customers.”

Despite these obstacles, Michael persevered. Some clients were initially disgruntled with his restricted availability, but many backed him and rearranged their schedules to help him thrive.

To do well on exams, Michael sacrificed sleep. His hard effort earned him a second-class upper division in political science.

Michael was proud of his achievements and freedom. He wants to inspire kids to be independent and not depend on their parents.

“I did this for my future children,” Michael remarked. “Though difficult, the sense of achievement is worth it.”
